1. Atour Eyvazian

Menikmati waktu santai sambil merendam kaki di dalam bak berisi ratusan ikan Garra Rufa atau biasa dikenal dengan metode pedikur dengan terapi ikan, kini sedang menjadi tren di dunia kecantikan dan kesehatan.
Namun dibalik manfaatnya, para ahli memperingatkan bahwa terapi ini bisa menjadi cara berbahaya yang berisiko tinggi menjadi penyebar infeksi hepatitis C.
Seperti dikutip laman Telegraph, para dokter menyatakan, pedikur ikan bisa menyebarkan infeksi dari orang ke orang melalui luka terbuka dan menyebabkan terjadinya penyebaran infeksi hepatitis C.
“Mereka yang dengan diabetes, psoriasis atau sistem kekebalan tubuh yang lemah sangat rentan,” ujar Lembaga Perlindungan Kesehatan di Inggris yang telah mengeluarkan peringatan tersebut.
Aktivitas terapi ini memang sangat digilai sebagian masyarakat dunia termasuk di Asia Timur. Namun, beberapa negara bagian AS, termasuk Florida, Texas, New Hampshire dan Washington, sangat mengkhawatirkan metode ini, karena takut, infeksi dapat menyebar melalui luka terbuka. Inilah sebabnya mengapa beberapa negara di AS, melarang layanan terapi ikan.Tak hanya itu, kondisi kolam terapi ikan yang terlalu kecil dan seringkali digunakan oleh banyak orang, dikhawatirkan pula menjadi sarang berkembangnya mikroorganisme, dengan demikian masalah kesehatan dapat meningkat, baik ketika bakteri ditularkan oleh ikan, atau dari kondisi airnya sendiri dan dari satu orang ke orang lainnya.
Sesungguhnya, air dalam bak terapi ikan harus selalu disterilkan. Namun, karena khawatir ikan Garra Rufa yang ada di dalamnya mati, sehingga, pemilik layanan terapi ini, jarang sekali melakukan steriliasi air.
Salah seorang dermatolog asal India, Swati asli Mumbai mengamati masalah ini. Ini, katanya bisa menjadi konsekuensi berat. “Terapi ikan yang mungkin tampak menyegarkan dapat mempengaruhi kulit. Dan dapat menyebabkan infeksi kaki bagi beberapa orang. Kontak dengan darah atau bakteri dari orang lain di dalam air dan juga ikan, dengan tubuh Anda juga dapat menyebabkan penyakit mematikan seperti HIV,” katanya.
Dokter kulit lainnya, Dr SS Trasi juga mengungkapkan bagaimana kulit seseorang yang halus juga bisa menderita karena air dalam bak terapi ikan yang tak higienis. “Selama perawatan, seseorang merendamkan kaki dalam tangki yang berisi air hangat bersama dengan ikan kecil ompong. Ikan-ikan itu hanya makan kulit mati, tetapi kadang-kadang mereka juga cenderung menggigit kulit dengan luka terbuka,” katanya.
Meski masalah ini menjadi perdebatan para dokter di banyak negara, namun, pakar kulit lainnya, Risha Mehta mengatakan agar masyarakat tidak langsung panik mendengar kabarni. “Jika Anda benar-benar ingin melakukan pedikur ikan, di sini atau di luar negeri, akan lebih baik, memeriksa terlebih dahulu bahwa Anda tidak memiliki kondisi kesehatan yang buruk. Juga melihat, bahwa kaki Anda tidak memiliki luka terbuka atau kondisi kulit menular. Ini penting untuk mencegah terjadinya risiko penyakit berbahaya.” (sj)
